⚠ ONE PEOPLE, FOUR COUNTRIES, AND AN ORIGIN IN A FIFTH. The Garifuna were deported from SAINT VINCENT to Roatán in 1797 and spread along the Caribbean coast into HONDURAS (much the largest population), BELIZE, GUATEMALA and NICARAGUA. Their language is ARAWAKAN with Carib and later French, Spanish and English layers — unusual in the Americas for being an Indigenous South American language spoken by an Afro-descendant people. Their language, dance and music are UNESCO-inscribed. The foodway: bitter and sweet CASSAVA processed into EREBA, the flat cassava bread, using the ruguma press; HUDUT — fish in coconut milk with pounded green and ripe plantain; TAPADO/tapou, the coconut seafood soup; cassava, plantain, coconut, fish, and a great deal of coconut milk. ⚠ GARIFUNA FOODWAYS ARE A ROOT IN THIS CORPUS.
