Ecuador’s altitude range means it grows tropical, subtropical and temperate fruit within a hundred kilometres. Highland and native: NARANJILLA (lulo) — sour, green-fleshed, the juice of the country; TOMATE DE ÁRBOL; TAXO (banana passionfruit); UVILLA (goldenberry); BABACO, a seedless natural hybrid of Carica found essentially only here; mora de Castilla; chirimoya; capulí. Lowland: mango, papaya, pineapple, guanábana, maracuyá, guaba, zapote, borojó, and the Amazonian arazá, MORETE and CHONTA palm fruits. Most are drunk rather than eaten — the JUGO is the default form.
