How This System Files the Caribbean

Comparison

⚠ A WARNING ROW ABOUT THIS SYSTEM ITSELF. The Caribbean is filed here in two places, on purpose. The SPANISH-SPEAKING islands — Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico — sit under `caribbean-latin-foodways` within Latin American foodways, because their language, colonial history and culinary vocabulary are Hispanic. The ANGLOPHONE and FRANCOPHONE-CREOLE islands — Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, the Bahamas, the Leewards and the Windwards — sit under `caribbean`. ⚠ THIS IS A LINGUISTIC AND COLONIAL DIVISION, NOT A CULINARY RANKING, and the two halves are joined by edges. ⚠ THE GUIANAS are filed separately again, under `guianas-foodways`, because they are mainland CARICOM states. ⚠ NO COUNTRY HERE IS A VARIANT OF ANOTHER.

What is recorded

  • The Caribbean is filed in this system as an umbrella rather than as a cuisine. Spanish-speaking islands remain under Caribbean-Latin foodways within Latin America; anglophone and francophone-creole islands sit under the Caribbean root; the Guianas are filed separately as mainland CARICOM states. The division is linguistic and colonial, not culinary, and is recorded explicitly rather than implied. documented
