Monégasque — a note on the language

Linguistic

⚠ MUNEGASCU IS A LIGURIAN LANGUAGE, of the Gallo-Italic group, closely related to the Genoese and Ventimigliese spoken along the coast — NOT a dialect of French and NOT of Standard Italian. It is taught compulsorily in Monaco’s schools, is used on street signs in the old town, and has a few thousand speakers; French is the official language, and Italian and English are everywhere. ⚠ Monégasques are a MINORITY IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY — under a quarter of residents — which is directly relevant to whose food is served where. Dish names are kept in Monégasque here.
