The country divides into eight regions and they are not alike: the Höfuðborgarsvæði around Reykjavík with most of the population and the restaurants; Suðurnes and its fishing towns; Vesturland; the VESTFIRÐIR, remote, steep and the heartland of harðfiskur and of hákarl; Norðurland vestra and eystra, with Akureyri, the best farmland and the dairy; Austurland and its fjord fishing towns; and Suðurland, with the greenhouse belt, the horse and sheep country and the glacial outwash.
