Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos: temperate rainforest, lakes and volcanoes, heavy rainfall, and the heartland of the MAPUCHE. Potatoes in great diversity, wheat, oats, berries — murta, maqui, calafate, plus commercial raspberries and blueberries; PIÑONES, the pine nuts of the araucaria; merkén, smoked and ground ají; dairy and cheese; salmon and trout; and the GERMAN settlement of Valdivia, Osorno, Puerto Varas and Llanquihue from 1850, which brought kuchen, beer and smallgoods.
