โ A WARNING ROW. ENGLAND is a country. GREAT BRITAIN is the island of England, Scotland and Wales. The UNITED KINGDOM is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland. The BRITISH ISLES is a geographic term that includes the Republic of Ireland and is rejected by many there. The ISLE OF MAN and the CHANNEL ISLANDS are Crown Dependencies and belong to none of those. โ "English food" and "British food" are therefore different claims, and a dish from Glasgow, Cardiff or Belfast is not English. This system keeps all five terms distinct.
