Festa Junina Foodways

Festival

June, for Saints Anthony, John and Peter, and the biggest food festival of the Brazilian year — bigger than Christmas in much of the Northeast, with Campina Grande and Caruaru claiming the largest. It is a MAIZE and PEANUT festival, because June is the maize harvest: pamonha, canjica or mungunzá, curau, milho cozido and assado, bolo de fubá, pé de moleque, paçoca, cocada, quentão and vinho quente. ⚠ THE MENU VARIES BY REGION — mungunzá is savoury in the Northeast and sweet in the Southeast under the name canjica, which is itself a different word for a different thing depending where you stand.
