Belgium’s Regions and Communities — a note

Comparison

⚠ A WARNING ROW. Belgium has THREE REGIONS (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital) and THREE LANGUAGE COMMUNITIES (Flemish, French, German-speaking), and THEY ARE NOT THE SAME DIVISION — the German-speaking Community sits inside the Walloon Region, and Brussels belongs to both the Flemish and French Communities at once. Food geography follows neither cleanly. A dish from Flanders is not automatically "Flemish" in the linguistic sense, and a dish from Wallonia is not automatically French.

What is recorded

  • Belgium’s three Regions and three language Communities are different divisions and do not coincide: the German-speaking Community lies within the Walloon Region and Brussels belongs to both the Flemish and French Communities. Food geography follows neither cleanly, and regional origin is not treated as evidence of linguistic identity. documented
