Belgian beer culture is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list and there is no close comparison anywhere: hundreds of breweries and a genuinely unusual range of live styles — witbier, saison, dubbel, tripel, quadrupel, Belgian strong and golden ales, Flemish red and oud bruin sours, and the lambic family. Beer is a cooking ingredient (carbonnade, lapin à la kriek), a cheese wash, and a glass-per-beer ritual. Abbey and Trappist brewing runs through it.
