Viking Food — an evidence note

Historical period

⚠ A WARNING ROW. Norwegian Viking Age archaeology — the Oseberg ship burial with its food deposits, settlement middens, isotope studies — is good evidence about what people ate. It is not evidence of modern Norwegian identity, and no line of culinary continuity is drawn from it to a modern dish. That stockfish drying is ancient is documented; that a modern dish is therefore "Viking food" is not.
