Diaspora
Welsh emigration followed coal, slate and religion: to PENNSYLVANIA and the Appalachian coalfields, to Ohio and the Welsh settlements of Wisconsin and the Lackawanna valley, where Welsh chapels, eisteddfodau and Welsh cakes persisted; to the slate quarries of Vermont; to Australia and New Zealand; and — most distinctively — to PATAGONIA in 1865, where Y Wladfa preserved the language and produced the té galés and torta negra galesa. ⚠ The Patagonian community is recorded in the Argentine system as a Patagonian tradition, not as Welsh food transplanted.
