Uruguayan Migration and Diaspora

Diaspora

A small country that has exported a large share of its people: emigration during the 1973-85 dictatorship and again after the 2002 economic collapse, chiefly to ARGENTINA, SPAIN, the United States โ€” with a notable concentration around Paterson and New Jersey โ€” Brazil, Australia and Italy, where descent-based citizenship made return migration possible. The durable markers abroad are the same three: the mate and thermos, the asado, and dulce de leche.
