Diaspora
One of the highest emigration rates in Europe. Two broad streams: westward to Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Israel, much of it long-term and much of it women in care work; and eastward to Russia and Ukraine, historically male and seasonal in construction. Jewish emigration to Israel and the United States from the 1900s and again from the 1970s is a separate and earlier stream. The result is villages held together by remittances and by food sent both ways.
