Waorani Foodways

Waorani

Indigenous

The WAORANI of Orellana, Pastaza and Napo were living without sustained outside contact until the 1950s. Their territory overlaps the YASUNÍ Biosphere Reserve, among the most biodiverse places measured on earth, and their food system is hunting, fishing, gathering and small chacras of yuca and plantain. ⚠ TWO GROUPS — THE TAGAERI AND TAROMENANE — LIVE IN VOLUNTARY ISOLATION inside an Intangible Zone, and nothing about them is recorded here beyond their existence and their legal protection. ⚠ THE 2023 REFERENDUM voting to leave the Yasuní-ITT oil in the ground is part of this food record.
