Shuar and Achuar Foodways

Indigenous

The SHUAR of Morona Santiago and Zamora Chinchipe and the ACHUAR of Pastaza and Morona are closely related Chicham-speaking peoples of the south-eastern Amazon, historically never conquered by the Inca or the Spanish. Yuca and its chicha (nijiamanch), plantain, palm fruits, river fish, hunted game, forest fruit, and the AYAMPACO โ€” fish or meat with palm heart and herbs wrapped in bijao leaf and grilled. โš  THE SHUAR ARE BEST KNOWN EXTERNALLY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT FOOD and that this system does not trade in. Both peoples have been central to the legal fight over oil and mining concessions on their territory, which is a food-system fact.
