Leeks, Vegetables and the Garden

Specialised

The LEEK is the Welsh national emblem, worn on St Davidโ€™s Day and mentioned by Shakespeare as already an old custom โ€” and it is also simply the vegetable that grows through a wet Welsh winter and goes into cawl. Alongside it: potatoes, swede, cabbage, carrot, and the garden and allotment that fed industrial households. โš  THE DAFFODIL IS A LATER SUBSTITUTE for the leek as an emblem, probably because it is prettier and because the Welsh words are similar.
