Island
SYLT, long and thin, now the most expensive resort in Germany and once a whaling and oyster island โ the Sylter Royal oyster is still farmed there; FรHR, the "green island", strongly Frisian-speaking, with a remarkable 19th-century emigration to New York that left food and family ties running both ways; AMRUM. Whaling wealth in the 17th and 18th centuries paid for the tiled houses and brought foreign goods into these kitchens early.
