The Eleven Municipalities

Local

ELEVEN GEMEINDEN, and the country divides sharply into two. The OBERLAND โ€” VADUZ, the capital, with the castle and the vineyard below it; TRIESEN; BALZERS at the southern end, with its Alemannic settlement history and the Gutenberg castle; SCHAAN, the largest by population, industrial and with its own vineyards; PLANKEN, the smallest, a Walser village on the terrace; and TRIESENBERG, the Walser mountain commune. The UNTERLAND โ€” ESCHEN, MAUREN, GAMPRIN with Bendern, RUGGELL at the northern tip with its protected wetland, and SCHELLENBERG. Each has its own dialect and its own Fasnacht.
