Parrillas and the Mercado del Puerto

City

The MERCADO DEL PUERTO in Montevideo — a wrought-iron market hall of 1868 now given over almost entirely to parrillas, their fires side by side — is the country’s best-known eating place, with the medio y medio, half still white wine and half sparkling, drunk alongside. Beyond it: the neighbourhood parrillada, the Mercado Agrícola, the ferias of Tristán Narvaja and the street markets, and the carritos selling chivito and choripán.
