Norway’s Indigenous People and Minorities

Comparison

⚠ A WARNING ROW. The SÁMI are recognised as an INDIGENOUS PEOPLE of Norway, not a minority, with the Sámediggi and rights under ILO 169. Norway also recognises five NATIONAL MINORITIES: KVENS/Norwegian Finns, FOREST FINNS, ROMA, ROMANI/TATERS and JEWS. Each has its own foodways; none is a branch of Norwegian foodways. The history includes fornorsking — the official Norwegianisation policy pursued into the twentieth century against Sámi and Kven language and culture — which is part of the food record too, because it is part of why some of this knowledge was nearly lost.
