Welsh-Argentine Foodways

Y Wladfa

Diaspora

In 1865 Welsh settlers landed at what became Puerto Madryn and founded Y WLADFA in the Chubut valley, deliberately to preserve the Welsh language away from English โ€” and it survives: PATAGONIAN WELSH is still spoken, taught and broadcast. The food institution is the TE GALร‰S, the Welsh tea of Gaiman and Trevelin, with TORTA NEGRA GALESA, a dense dark fruit cake matured for months, plus bara brith and scones. โš  NOT SIMPLY WELSH FOOD: it is a 160-year-old Patagonian tradition, and the torta negra in particular has no exact Welsh equivalent.
