Seelterlound
Regional
FOUR VILLAGES — Strücklingen, Ramsloh, Scharrel and Sedelsberg — in Lower Saxony, holding the LAST SURVIVING EAST FRISIAN LANGUAGE, Seeltersk, with roughly a thousand speakers. It survived precisely because the settlement sat on a sand ridge surrounded by impassable raised bog, cut off from the Low German country around it until the 19th century. The foodways are moorland and smallholding foodways: buckwheat, rye, potatoes, pigs, geese, peat-cut land, bog hay, and a subsistence economy on poor ground. ⚠ NOT A VARIANT OF WEST FRISIAN, and not the same thing as East Frisia.
Languages: Saterland Frisian
Saterland holds the last surviving East Frisian language; modern East Frisia does not.
