Rusyn Food History

Historical period

A framework, not a chronicle of continuity: Slavic settlement of the Carpathian slopes in the early medieval centuries; the Wallachian pastoral migration along the arc from roughly the 14th to 17th centuries, which carried the sheep-dairy complex and much of its vocabulary; the Kingdom of Hungary and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on either side of the ridge; the Union of Uzhhorod in 1646 creating the Greek Catholic structure that still sets the calendar; Habsburg rule, the potato and maize; emigration from the 1880s; Subcarpathian Rus 1919-1939; the Second World War and the destruction of the Jewish market towns; Soviet annexation, collectivisation and the 1949 suppression of the Greek Catholic Church; the 1947 deportations in Poland; and the revival since 1989.
