Byzantine Catholic and American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox parishes are the main surviving vehicle of Rusyn-American foodways: standing pirohy-making teams, festival kitchens, printed parish cookbooks, and the blessing of baskets — the mechanism by which a village practice became a scheduled community activity with a recipe in writing.
