A desert coast that is also one of the richest fisheries on earth, because the cold Humboldt Current upwells nutrients along it: anchoveta in enormous volume, plus corvina, lenguado, bonito, octopus, squid, scallops from Sechura, and the Peruvian black scallop. Behind the shore, irrigated river valleys grow ají, maize, cotton, rice, sugar, grapes, olives, avocado and lucuma. LIMA, CALLAO, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura and Arequipa’s coast are its cities, and the coast is where African, Chinese, Japanese and Italian migration concentrated.
