Roughly 800,000 Norwegians emigrated between 1825 and 1925 — proportionally second only to Ireland in Europe — overwhelmingly to the American Upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest, with smaller streams to Canada, and a distinct Norwegian settlement in Argentina and Brazil.
