Historical period

Roman Raetia and the road through the valley; Alemannic settlement; Walser migration into the heights from the 13th century; the counties of Vaduz and lordship of Schellenberg, bought by the Princes of Liechtenstein in 1699 and 1712 and made a principality in 1719; severe 19th-century poverty and emigration, with about a tenth of the population leaving for America; the customs union with AUSTRIA-HUNGARY to 1919 and then with SWITZERLAND from 1923, which reoriented the whole food supply westward; the Rhine corrections; and rapid industrialisation and wealth after 1945.
