The islands are named for their sheep โ€” Fรธroyar is most often read as "sheep islands" โ€” and there have been more sheep than people since the Norse settlement. A small hardy breed grazed on the outfield all year, divided between villages under a communal system of ancient standing, slaughtered in autumn, and then almost entirely PRESERVED rather than eaten fresh.
