Wales — a note on country and language

Comparison

⚠ A WARNING ROW. WALES is a country of the United Kingdom, not a region of England, and has been legally and politically distinct throughout. Its modern local government is 22 PRINCIPAL AREAS, which are not the same as the HISTORIC COUNTIES — Anglesey, Caernarfonshire, Merionethshire, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, Brecknockshire, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Glamorgan and Monmouthshire — that the food traditions actually reference. Older still are the medieval kingdoms: GWYNEDD, POWYS, DEHEUBARTH and MORGANNWG. ⚠ CYMRAEG, the Welsh language, is official in Wales and is a Brittonic Celtic language, not a variety of English.

What is recorded

  • Wales has 22 modern principal areas, a separate set of historic counties to which most food traditions refer, and older medieval kingdoms — Gwynedd, Powys, Deheubarth and Morgannwg — which are cultural rather than administrative geography.
