SPANIARDS โ Galicians above all, plus Basques and Canarians, the last settling Canelones and giving the country much of its early farming โ with puchero, tortilla, empanadas gallegas and the Basque pelota clubs that came with their own kitchens. Also: FRENCH and Swiss at Colonia Suiza and Nueva Helvecia, who built the CHEESE industry; Germans; Jewish communities in Montevideo from the 1900s and again in the 1930s; Lebanese and Syrians; Armenians, one of the larger communities in South America; and recent arrivals from Venezuela, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
