Trappist Foodways

Religious

⚠ TRAPPIST IS NOT A BEER STYLE — IT IS A CERTIFICATION OF ORIGIN. The Authentic Trappist Product label requires that the beer be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, under the monks’ supervision, with profits going to the community and to charity rather than to shareholders. Belgium holds several of the world’s handful of Trappist breweries — Westmalle, Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Achel — and the same abbeys make cheese and bread. Abbey beers brewed commercially under licence are a different category and are not merged with them here.
