Nevis
Island
A single volcano with a cloud on top, around 11,000 people, and a distinct identity that has twice gone to a secession referendum. CHARLESTOWN and the villages โ Gingerland, Cotton Ground, Brown Hill, Newcastle. The food: fishing and conch; goat and goat water; saltfish; provisions; the sea-island cotton and sugar history; and the local sweets and drinks of CULTURAMA, the Nevisian cultural festival held around Emancipation Day in August, which is where Nevisian food is most deliberately presented. โ NEVIS IS ALSO HISTORICALLY NOTABLE as the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and as an early sugar and slave-trading centre, and its estate ruins are the landscape. โ ITS FOODWAYS ARE RECORDED SEPARATELY FROM SAINT KITTS, not as a variant.
