Greenlandic Hunting Foodways

Specialised

Hunting is a food system, an economy and a social structure, not a sport. SEAL — ringed, harp, hooded and bearded — is the foundation, eaten boiled, dried, raw and frozen, and the skin sold. Then walrus, narwhal, beluga, minke whale and, in some districts, fin whale, all under quota; polar bear in the far north under strict regulation; wild reindeer and musk ox; hare; and seabirds. ⚠ SPECIES AND PRACTICE VARY ENTIRELY BY DISTRICT and no practice described here is universal. ⚠ Everything is subject to quota, licensing and international agreement, and no hunting ground, method or timing that would assist unlawful taking is recorded in this system.
