Bessarabian German Foodways

Community

German colonists invited to the Bessarabian steppe from 1814, who built the region’s first commercial wineries and orchards and brought sausage, baking and distilling practice. Almost the whole community was resettled to German-held territory in 1940 under the Nazi-Soviet agreement; the villages remain, the community does not.
