Ecuadorian Festival Foodways

Festival

The food calendar. INTI RAYMI at the June solstice — the Kichwa harvest and sun festival, strongest in Imbabura and the central sierra, with chicha de jora, pampamesa and the return of maize. PAWKAR RAYMI in February-March, the flowering festival, overlapping CARNAVAL, when Ambato holds its Fiesta de las Flores y las Frutas and the sierra eats mote pata and chicha. KOLLA RAYMI and KAPAK RAYMI at the other two solar points. SEMANA SANTA and fanesca. CORPUS CHRISTI in Cuenca and Pujilí with its sweets. DÍA DE LOS DIFUNTOS. FIESTAS DE QUITO in early December with canelazo. CHRISTMAS with pristiños, buñuelos and pavo. ⚠ THE SOLAR FESTIVALS AND THE SAINTS’ DAYS SIT ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER, deliberately, and the overlay is the history.
