⚠ A WARNING ROW. Danish prehistory yields exceptionally good food evidence — the Ertebølle middens, bog bodies with preserved stomach contents, waterlogged Viking Age deposits at Hedeby and Ribe. That is ARCHAEOLOGICAL evidence about what people ate. It is not evidence of modern Danish identity, and no line of culinary continuity is drawn from a Viking Age grain deposit to a modern dish. Archaeological, written, linguistic and modern ethnographic evidence are separate kinds of statement.
