Chontaduro

Chontaduro

Specialised

The fruit of the peach palm (Bactris gasipaes), a pre-Columbian domesticate of the western Amazon and the Pacific. โš  IT MUST BE BOILED โ€” raw it is inedible and contains irritant oxalate crystals. Boiled in salted water for a long time, then sold warm from a bucket on a street corner in Cali or Buenaventura, eaten with salt and honey. Dense, oily, orange, and far more a staple than a snack in the Pacific, where it also becomes flour and chicha. โš  A LARGE BODY OF FOLK BELIEF ATTACHES TO IT as an aphrodisiac; that is recorded as folk claim and nothing more.
