Afro-Colombian Pacific Foodways

Community

The Pacific coast is the heart of Afro-Colombian Colombia: Chocó is among the most Afro-descendant departments in the Americas, and Buenaventura, Tumaco, Quibdó and Guapi are Black cities. Free and maroon communities — PALENQUES — formed in these rivers during slavery, and Law 70 of 1993 recognised collective land title for Black communities on the Pacific, which is a land-tenure fact and therefore a food-system fact. The kitchen is the coconut-and-herb one above; the culture around it includes the MARIMBA DE CHONTA and the cantos of the southern Pacific, inscribed by UNESCO, and the FIESTAS DE SAN PACHO in Quibdó, also inscribed. ⚠ THE REGION HAS ALSO BORNE SOME OF THE WORST OF THE ARMED CONFLICT, including the Bojayá massacre, and displacement is a food-system event.
