Surinamese Rice and Agriculture

Agricultural region

RICE in NICKERIE on the western coastal plain, on polder land behind the sea defences, grown since the Javanese and Hindustani indentured labourers took up land at the end of their contracts, and now a substantial export. Also: bananas and plantain; sugar, historically; citrus in Commewijne; COCONUT in Coronie, which is a monoculture and a landscape; cassava everywhere; vegetables from the Wanica market gardens; and the forest products and palm fruits of the interior. ⚠ THE COASTAL AGRICULTURE SITS ON DRAINED LAND, as in Guyana, and is a Dutch engineering inheritance.
