New World Crops in Norway

Historical period

⚠ A DATING ROW. The potato reached Norway in the 18th century and became a staple around 1800, its adoption driven by clergy — the "potetprestene" — and by the grain shortages of the Napoleonic blockade. Tomatoes, peppers and maize are marginal and modern. Cocoa, sugar, coffee and spices arrived through the Danish-Norwegian and later international trade, and modern Norwegian sweet baking is built on them.
