New England Foodways

Regional

Six states — Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont — on a cold, rocky, glaciated coast that was never good farming and was always excellent fishing. COD built it, and the "sacred cod" still hangs in the Massachusetts State House. The food: CHOWDER, in three mutually exclusive styles; the CLAMBAKE; LOBSTER and the lobster roll; MAPLE from Vermont; CRANBERRIES from the Cape Cod bogs; wild BLUEBERRIES from the Maine barrens; BAKED BEANS and brown bread; Indian pudding; johnnycakes; apple cider and cider donuts; whoopie pies and Boston cream pie. ⚠ AND IT IS AN IMMIGRANT REGION AS MUCH AS A PURITAN ONE: Irish, Italian, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, French-Canadian, Jewish, Greek, Armenian, Caribbean, Brazilian and Southeast Asian communities are the reason it eats as it does now.
