Minett and the Red Lands

Minett

Subregional

The south-west iron-ore basin — the RED LANDS, named for the ore in the soil — around ESCH-SUR-ALZETTE, DIFFERDANGE, DUDELANGE and Rumelange. Luxembourg’s steel industry was built here and so was its modern population: ITALIAN migration from the 1890s and PORTUGUESE from the 1960s arrived to work the mines and the mills. The result is a genuinely different food geography from the rest of the country — pasta, pizza, bacalhau, grilled chicken and Portuguese bakeries as ordinary local food, alongside the canteen and the miners’ café.
