Izabal: PUERTO BARRIOS and Santo Tomás, the container ports; LÍVINGSTON (Labuga), reachable only by water, GARIFUNA and Q’EQCHI’ and Creole and Ladino; the RÍO DULCE gorge and LAKE IZABAL, the largest lake in Guatemala. The food: TAPADO — fish, shrimp, crab and coconut milk with plantain and cassava, the dish Lívingston is known for; HUDUT and EREBA; RICE AND BEANS in coconut milk; PAN DE COCO; MACHUCA; fish from the lake and the Río Dulce, including the manatee historically and now protected; Q’eqchi’ maize and cacao in the hills behind. ⚠ AND THE BANANA COAST: the United Fruit Company’s railway and ports made Izabal, and the 1954 coup that followed land reform affecting its holdings is part of this department’s history.
