New World Crops in Denmark

Historical period

⚠ A DATING ROW. The potato reached Denmark in the 17th century as a curiosity and became a staple only through the 18th, pushed by the "kartoffeltyskere" settled on the Jutland heath from 1759. Tomatoes and peppers are 19th- and 20th-century arrivals in ordinary use; maize is fodder; and cocoa, vanilla and chilli came through the colonial trade. Sugar itself was a luxury before the West Indian and later beet supply.
