The Venezuelan Food Crisis

Modern

⚠ THIS ROW IS NOT SOFTENED AND IS NOT DECORATION. From about 2014 Venezuela entered an economic collapse with hyperinflation, and the food system with it: price controls and scarcity, queues, the CLAP subsidised food boxes and the political control exercised through them, the disappearance of harina P.A.N. and milk from shelves, and documented weight loss across the population and rising child malnutrition reported by national surveys and international agencies. Households substituted — yuca for harina, plantain for bread — and urban and household gardens expanded. ⚠ RECORDED AS A DOCUMENTED FOOD-SYSTEM EVENT, sourced to the survey and agency record rather than to any political account, and not resolved into a single cause here.
