Indo-Jamaican and Chinese-Jamaican Foodways

Community

Indentured migration after emancipation brought around 36,000 INDIANS to Jamaica between 1845 and 1917, chiefly Bhojpuri-speaking, settling in Clarendon, St Catherine, Westmoreland and St Mary โ€” and with them CURRY, which Jamaica took wholesale and made its own: curry goat is now a national dish and appears at every funeral, wedding and nine-night. Also roti, dhal, mango chutney, and the ganja complex. CHINESE migration from 1854, largely Hakka, produced the Chinese shop in every village, and dishes now entirely Jamaican โ€” the patty-and-chinese-food shop, sweet and sour, and the influence on Jamaican fried rice. โš  CURRY GOAT IS RECORDED AS JAMAICAN FOOD OF INDIAN ORIGIN, not as Indian food in Jamaica.
