Frisian Island Foodways

Island

⚠ THE WADDEN ISLANDS ARE NOT ALIKE and they are split across three states. The DUTCH WEST FRISIAN ISLANDS: Texel, with its salt-marsh lamb, its own sheep breed and its fisheries; Vlieland; Terschelling, with cranberries washed ashore in a barrel in 1845 and farmed since; Ameland; Schiermonnikoog, which has its own Frisian variety. The GERMAN EAST FRISIAN ISLANDS — Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, Wangerooge — which are LOW GERMAN speaking, not Frisian. And the NORTH FRISIAN ISLANDS — Sylt, Föhr, Amrum — which are Frisian-speaking and belong with North Frisia.
