Sikuani and Orinoco Indigenous Foodways

Indigenous

The SIKUANI (Guahibo), historically mobile hunter-gatherers and horticulturalists of the Llanos and the Orinoco, now largely in resguardos in Vichada, Meta and Arauca and also in Venezuela; with the PIAPOCO, CURRIPACO, PUINAVE and others along the Orinoco and Guaviare. Bitter yuca processed into CASABE and MAÑOCO/fariña; river fish; hunted game; palm fruits — moriche above all, whose fruit, heart and grubs are all food; wild honey. ⚠ THEIR HISTORY INCLUDES THE GUAHIBIADA, the hunting of Sikuani people by settlers into the twentieth century, prosecuted in the Planas case; that is part of this food-system record because it is why their territory is what it is.
