⚠ A WARNING ROW. Terra preta soils, the Marajoara mounds, the Santarém ceramics and the sambaqui shell middens of the coast are archaeological evidence of sophisticated pre-Columbian food systems. They are not evidence about any particular modern people, and no modern dish is traced to them as continuity. Archaeological, historical, linguistic, ethnographic and self-identification evidence are different kinds of statement.
